Orfanato Raios de Esperança - Bugiri, Uganda

O orfanato Raios de Esperança (Rays of Hope Children Center) é localizado em Bugiri, Uganda e atende atualmente 38 crianças entre 3 e 15 anos. É uma iniciativa que nasceu no coração de uma mãe, Aisha, e um filho, Arafat,  que passaram por grandes dificuldades durante a vida e gostariam de mudar a realidade de crianças orfãs para que não viessem a viver a mesma situação de desamparo e miséria. O orfanato não conta com nenhum tipo de patrocínio, apenas com doações de pessoas sensibilizadas com a história e com a mão de obra de alguns vizinhos do orfanato. Nos últimos meses, o orfanato tem sofrido com a falta de alimentação suficiente para todos os acolhidos, sem mencionar a impossibilidade das crianças irem para a escola. Buscamos obter a quantia equivalente a 12 meses de recursos alimentícios, equivalentes a 21.600 reais, sendo que mensalmente os custos com alimentação são de 1800 reais por mês. Isso não é nada perto de toda a carência que estas crianças sofrem, porém buscamos dar-lhes o mínimo de dignidade ao lutar para garantir o básico para sua sobrevivência.

Para que conheçam a história do orfanato, anexamos abaixo uma carta escrita pelo próprio idealizador do projeto, Arafat, ele mesmo um ex-órfão que foi acolhido um dia e que hoje se esforça para acolher outras crianças abandonadas:

"Louvado seja o Senhor e saudações a todos.

Meu nome é Njuba Arafat, de Uganda, do orfanato RAYS OF HOPE CHILDREN CENTER. Vou contar uma história sobre mim mesmo e sobre a criação do orfanato RAYS OF HOPE CHILDREN CENTER também.

Nasci em 2003, no distrito de Bugiri, no hospital principal de Bugiri, e este ano vou completar 21 anos. Graças ao Senhor. Aqui está minha história.

Cresci com minha mãe, Nakakande Aisha, no distrito de Bugiri. Levávamos uma vida pobre, em que às vezes pulávamos algumas refeições por falta de dinheiro. Às vezes tínhamos café da manhã, mas precisávamos pular o almoço para ter o jantar.

No entanto, à medida que o tempo passava, minha mãe conseguiu um emprego no Orfanato Miracle Center. Este orfanato funcionou nos anos anteriores, mas infelizmente fechou. No entanto, era um orfanato baseado em plantação, que obtinha sua comida do jardim e da plantação. Então, nos deram um lugar para ficar no orfanato com minha mãe, e ela foi contratada como cozinheira, ajudando também na agricultura.

Sempre ia com ela para o campo e ela também tinha que cozinhar, então desenvolvi muito interesse na agricultura, e ela se tornou parte de mim. O Miracle Center me acolheu como filho deles; no entanto, não nos ofereceu educação, apenas contavam histórias durante a noite. Isso magoou muito minha mãe, e ela trabalhou muito para garantir que eu fosse à escola, e graças a Deus, consegui. Estudei minha educação primária na Escola Primária de Bugiri e a secundária na Escola Secundária de Bugiri, embora não tenha conseguido terminar o ensino médio por falta de dinheiro.

À medida que o tempo passava, o Miracle Center fechou e tivemos que encontrar outro lugar para morar. Mas, como minha mãe era trabalhadora, conseguiu outro emprego na fazenda de um homem chamado Sr. Paul. Ele era rico e, devido ao nosso trabalho árduo em seu local, ele nos ofereceu um pedaço de terra para praticarmos nossa agricultura. Trabalhamos muito, eu e minha mãe, vendendo algumas colheitas e reservando para nosso próprio sustento. Consegui economizar o suficiente por um bom tempo e então decidi abrir meu próprio orfanato porque tinha a experiência anterior de que um orfanato pode ser baseado em agricultura. Então, aluguei dois quartos, cada um por 50.000 xelins de Uganda (aprox. 64 reais). Comecei com 8 crianças em 2020 e expandi lentamente. Em 2021, meu irmão de consideração, Benjamin Mukose, me orientou sobre como divulgar meu orfanato na internet, o que me permitiria obter mais fundos e realizar meu sonho também. Então, aceitei a ideia e abri uma conta no Instagram. Foi lá que postei mais vídeos e fotos das crianças e do orfanato. As pessoas começaram a seguir minha conta e outras faziam perguntas, às quais respondi sobre como o orfanato RAYS OF HOPE CHILDREN CENTER funciona. Alguns prometeram ajudar, outros ajudaram com o que puderam. Agora alugo 4 quartos e tenho um total de 38 crianças. Também trabalho com meu irmão Benjamin Mukose, minha irmã de consideração Shurea, minha mãe Aisha e meus colegas Nabirye e Nicholas, que me ajudam no jardim e no trabalho no orfanato. Temos sobrevivido com a agricultura e algumas doações de amigos na internet, além de doações dos moradores da aldeia. Mas agora estou realmente em grande aflição porque o sol destruiu as colheitas, e a comida está limitada no momento. Lembre-se de que temos que pagar o aluguel, e os moradores da aldeia não podem nos fornecer apoio suficiente porque têm suas próprias famílias para sustentar. Em resumo, o sofrimento está por toda parte em Uganda, e não posso interromper meu trabalho, devo para melhorar o orfanato e acolher mais crianças, porque sei o que significa viver nas ruas. Tenho o sonho de comprar terra e construir um orfanato maior, com uma estrutura adequada para comida, roupas, lençóis, colchões e etc para as crianças. Atualmente, estou conduzindo um projeto educacional para ajudar minhas crianças a irem para a escola e terem um grande futuro. Acredito que a educação é a chave para o sucesso. Portanto, peço o seu apoio para que possamos trabalhar juntos para salvar a vida de muitas crianças que estão sofrendo em Uganda e mudar suas vidas também. Acredito que com Deus tudo é possível, portanto, seja nossa luz e nos dê uma mão de apoio neste projeto, assim como em nosso sustento mensal. Que o Senhor abençoe a todos".

ENGLISH:The Rays of Hope Children Center, also known as "Orfanato Raios de Esperança" in Portuguese, is located in Bugiri, Uganda, and currently serves 38 children between the ages of 3 and 15. It is an initiative that originated in the hearts of a mother, Aisha, and her son, Arafat, who have faced significant challenges in life. They aspire to change the reality for orphaned children so that they do not experience the same sense of helplessness and misery. The orphanage operates without any sponsorship and relies solely on donations from individuals moved by the story, as well as the labor of some neighbors. In recent months, the orphanage has been struggling with a shortage of adequate food for all the children, not to mention the inability to send them to school. We are seeking to raise the equivalent of 12 months' worth of food resources, amounting to 21,600 Brazilian reais. Monthly, the costs for food are 1,800 reais. While this amount may seem insufficient given the overall needs these children face, our goal is to provide them with the minimum level of dignity by striving to secure the essentials for their survival.

So that you may become acquainted with the orphanage's history, we have attached below a letter written by the project's founder, Arafat. He himself was once an orphan who was taken in, and today, he strives to provide shelter for other abandoned children:

"Praise the Lord every one.

My name is Njuba Arafat from Uganda, Rays of hope children center. I am going to tell you a story about myself and the creation of rays of hope children center as well. 

I was born in 2003 in Bugiri district, Bugiri main hospital, and I am going to turn 21 years old this year. Thanks to the Lord. Here it goes.

I grew up with my mother Nakakande Aisha, in Bugiri district. We lived a poor life in which we even skipped some meals due to lack of money. Sometimes we had breakfast, then we had to skip lunch in order to have dinner.

However, as time went on my mother got a job at Miracle Center orphanage. This orphanage operated in the past years but it collapsed, unfortunately. However, this was a farm-based orphanage that used to get its food out of the garden and the farm. So, we were given a place to stay at the orphanage with my mother and she was employed as a cook and she used to help in the farming too.

Because I moved with her to the garden and she had to cook, I developed much interest in the farming and farming became part of me. Miracle center took me as their child; however, it didn’t offer us education and they only told us stories during the night. This hurt my mother a lot and she worked hard to see that I went to school and thanks God willing I did. I studied my primary education at Bugiri primary school and my secondary at Bugiri high school though I failed to finish high school due to lack of money. As time went by, Miracle Center collapsed and we had to find another place to live. But since my mom was hardworking, she got another job at someone’s farm, a man called Mr. Paul. He was a rich man and due to our hard work at his place he offered us a piece of land to practice our farming from. We worked so hard with my mom as we sold some crops and kept for food. I managed to get enough savings for a good time and there I decided to start up my own orphanage because I had an earlier experience that an orphanage can be farm-based. So, I rented some two rooms and each was 50,000 Uganda shillings. I started up with 8 children in 2020 and expanded slowly. In 2021, I was briefed by my foster brother Benjamin Mukose about expressing my foundation to the internet and that this would enable me get more funds and fulfillment of my dream, too. So, I took his idea and opened up an Instagram account. This is where I posted more videos and pictures of the children and the orphanage. So, people started following my account and others asked questions which I replied with answers about how Rays of Hope Children Center functions. Some promised to help and others helped with what they could. Now I rent 4 rooms, and I have 38 children in total. I also work with my foster brother Benjamin Mukose, my foster sister Shurea, my mother Aisha and my fellow villagers Nabirye and Nicholas, who help me at the garden and work at the orphanage. We have been surviving on the garden and some donations from friends on the internet and also villagers’ donations. But now I am really in great distress because the sunshine destroyed crops, and food is limited now. Remember we have to pay rent and also the villagers can’t get us enough support because they have their own families to support. All in all, suffering is everywhere in Uganda and I can’t stop my work to improve the orphanage to accommodate more children because I know what it means to live on the streets. I have a dream of purchasing land and building of a bigger orphanage, having proper structure of enough food, clothes, bedsheets, mattresses and others for the children.

I am running now an education project to help my children go to school and have a great future. I believe education is the key to success. So, I call upon your support please to see that we work together to save lives of many children who are suffering in Uganda and change their lives, too.
