Ajude jovens indígenas a aprender a ler, escrever e contar suas próprias histórias

O Projeto Palavra em Cena vai levar alfabetização em língua portuguesa para jovens indígenas da Aldeia Toniya, no Acre, de forma respeitosa e culturalmente viva.

Através da arte, do desenho, da imagem e das narrativas visuais, os jovens aprendem a ler e escrever a partir de sua própria história e da memória coletiva do povo Noke Kuin (Katukina). A educação acontece sem apagar a cultura, fortalecendo identidade, autoestima e pertencimento.

Hoje, a degradação da floresta tem dificultado a sobrevivência tradicional da comunidade. Aprender português tornou-se essencial para acessar educação, serviços, intercâmbios culturais e oportunidades de trabalho nas cidades próximas.

Help Indigenous Youth Learn to Read, Write, and Tell Their Own Stories

The Word on Stage project brings literacy in the Portuguese language to Indigenous youth from the Toniya Village, in the state of Acre, Brazil, in a respectful and culturally vibrant way.

Through art, drawing, images, and visual storytelling, young participants learn to read and write based on their own history and the collective memory of the Noke Kuin (Katukina) people. Education takes place without erasing culture, strengthening identity, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.

Today, environmental degradation of the forest has made traditional subsistence increasingly difficult for the community. Learning Portuguese has become essential for accessing education, public services, cultural exchanges, and job opportunities in nearby cities.

My name is Suely Gomes, a psychologist, educator, and researcher who has been working with Indigenous causes since 2021.

The Word on Stage project is rooted in a commitment to listening, language, culture, and the dignity of Indigenous peoples.

The project already counts on the important support of the Mahle Institute, and we are now seeking partnerships and financial support to complement and sustain the actions in the territory.
